Carl Barron Plaza Redesign

Project Highlights

  • Extensive Community Outreach / Public Process
  • Multimodal Design
  • Flexible, Programmable Design

As part of the “Complete Streets” reconstruction of River Street, Halvorson | Tighe & Bond Studio is collaborating with the City of Cambridge, HDR, McMahon Associates, and Project for Public Spaces to redesign Carl Barron Plaza, a significant open space at the heart of Central Square.

The project has undergone an extensive outreach strategy, including numerous public meetings, working group sessions, an online survey, interactive project website, and pop-up events at the plaza. The goal is to create a welcoming, revitalized public space that addresses the needs of the community and those who pass through this important transit hub.

Halvorson developed a series of concepts for reimagining the plaza that balance circulation with the City’s goal of creating an inviting and programmable open space. The improved plaza will feature new shade structures, fixed and moveable seating to allow for greater flexibility, new trees and planters, and a reconfigured multimodal design to better address the needs of bus riders, pedestrians, and bicyclists.
