Halvorson Undertakes Restoration of Fountain and Surrounding Landscape Enhancement

Commissioned by famed entertainer and notable animal lover, Charlotte ‘Lotta’ Crabtree, the ten-foot-tall Lotta Fountain was design in 1939 by sculptor, Katherine Lane Weems. After years of neglect, Halvorson | Tighe & Bond Studio, Catherine Truman Architects, and an engineering team worked with The Esplanade Association to return the fountain to working condition and enhance the landscape surrounding this canine-friendly destination.

The sculpture’s unique Art Deco design consists of a fountain-fed pool for dogs and unique sculpted granite elements. Granite benches surround the statue and serve as a place for people and their pets to congregate and relax. Conservation of the Lotta Fountain was completed in 2017, and included restoration of the fountain, cleaning and repointing of the granite, restoration of the dog and cat figures, improved accessibility, installation of a new bronze basin, and new plantings and garden beds.
