A Whole New Ballgame in Red Hook’s Town Park

Working with the Town of Red Hook Recreation Commission and the Town Board, Tighe & Bond is undertaking a multi-year upgrade and expansion of the Town’s recreation park facilities. Park planning activities commenced with a six-month community engagement process consisting of multiple meetings and listening sessions with the community. Extensive stakeholder engagement with the public school system, private ball clubs, and neighbors was necessary to develop this master plan.

With the Town Board’s endorsement of the master plan, Tighe & Bond developed a three-phase plan for the construction of the improvements, including ADA upgrades to the existing concession and restroom facilities and the development of an ADA accessible challenger multi-sport field. Tighe & Bond has also facilitated the permitting process with local boards and state agencies and assisted in successfully applying for grant funds to provide the ADA upgrades to the baseball field and concessions facilities.

In the western part of the park, Phase 1 of the improvements included creation of a new accessible trailhead including access driveway, accessible parking area, trailhead information area with a kiosk, and site furniture, as well as the first 900 LF of the Saw Kill Trail, a new trail connecting the Village and Town of Red Hook to the New York Empire State Trail. Trail construction consisted of a mix of asphalt and stabilized stone dust. Drainage control and stormwater management were integrated into the site design. Adjacent to the site improvements, meadow grass was installed to allow a network of mowed paths to be used by the community.

In the park’s eastern half, Phase 1 included the construction of a new multi-use field using synthetic turf. This field provides recreation for users such as men’s over 40 league, high school softball, and challenger baseball games. The second phase of the project updated the surrounding facilities by providing ADA access to both the new field and the improved restroom facilities.
