Connecting a Waterfront with its Maritime History

Halvorson, Tighe & Bond’s landscape architecture studio, designed Quincy Navy Park at Squantum to celebrate the city’s shipbuilding and naval aviation heritage. Along the Marina Bay waterfront, curved walkways, seating areas, and interpretive features connect visitors with the people and industries that shaped the site.

A large interpretive wall translates this history into a three-dimensional experience. Its curved form recalls a ship’s hull, while its ends evoke the cross section of an airplane wing. Exposed fasteners, structural ribs, and industrial detailing reference the site’s manufacturing legacy. Historical panels share the site’s story, and lighting integrated into circular openings at the wall’s ends highlights its distinctive form.

At the park’s center, the Lone Sailor monument honors those who have served at sea. Bronze plaques surrounding the statue recognize Navy veterans from Quincy, connecting the broader tribute to the community’s own service members. Nearby, the original bell from the third USS Quincy rests within a custom sculptural support that allows visitors to approach and experience the historic artifact up close.

Together, the landscape and commemorative elements provide a waterfront destination where residents and visitors can learn about local history, reflect on military service, and gather as a community.
