solutions for protecting the city from flooding. The project team, including Arcadis, Halvorson, Woods Hole Group and CivicMoxie, were tasked with developing resiliency strategies which create social, economic, and environmental benefits to the people of South Boston.

Through a series of focus group meetings and open houses, the team presented options and collected feedback from developers, residents, and other stakeholders on preferred solutions. Options explored include building vertical seawalls, promoting the resilient design of buildings and structures, construction of a raised harborwalk/park space, and the creation of natural barriers such as a salt marsh or sand dune.

Released in Fall 2018, the report provides a roadmap and implementation strategy for protecting South Boston from sea level rise, and offers solutions that recognize the need to balance safety with a desire to introduce welcoming open spaces that enrich the community.

This project was awarded the 2019 Sustainability & Resiliency Award from the Massachusetts chapter of the American Planning Association, as well as the 2020 Analysis & Planning Merit Award from the Boston Society of Landscape Architects.
