Designing Public Spaces for a Dynamic Mixed-Use Development

Allston LabWorks will serve as a dynamic hub of research, housing, and retail activity that aligns with the City of Boston’s goal to create a vibrant mixed-use corridor along Western Avenue.

Halvorson is collaborating with developer King Street Properties and architects DiMella Shaffer to design the public spaces and streetscape for this innovative biotechnology research complex. Located on a pair of parcels, the project is comprised of three buildings designed to renew and revitalize Western Avenue by introducing a new mixed-use development anchored by state-of-the-art research facilities, offices, residences, a small green space serving the tenants and community, and a vibrant streetscape activated by ground floor retail and restaurants.

Located between building 250 and 280, Artist Way is celebrating the vibrant artist community in Allston by providing a visual and pedestrian connection between the neighboring community and Western Avenue.  Artist Way will feature ample outdoor seating as well as shared use, flexible and programmable open space.
