Beacon of Excellence Shines in New Haven

The success of this $476 million development rested heavily on the close collaboration of the Yale-New Haven Hospital, Turner Construction Company, and Tighe & Bond. This 14-story, 487,000 square foot hospital is the most comprehensive, state-of-the-art cancer care facility in Connecticut, and a leader in personalized patient care.

The project entailed the construction of the LEED certified Smilow Cancer Center (North Pavilion), a pedestrian bridge, a loading dock, and access tunnels under City roadways. Additionally, several off-site transportation system improvements were implemented as required by State and City agencies, including a unique modern roundabout at the Air Rights Garage.

One of the Largest Developments in New Haven

Tighe & Bond provided complete site development, demolition engineering services, drainage, traffic engineering, roadway design, and traffic signal design services for one of the largest development projects in the City of New Haven.

From the onset, Tighe & Bond was actively involved in this award-winning project. To make way for the new facility, we provided comprehensive environmental management services to Yale New Haven Hospital to assess hazardous materials, and demolish the seven-story former Grace Hospital building that already existed on the property. During the design of the new facility, we provided complete site development and utility design, traffic engineering, roadway and traffic signal design.

Tighe & Bond’s transportation planning efforts included the development of a transportation master plan for on-site and off-site related transportation improvements. We also provided preliminary engineering, schematic design and construction documents for the modern roundabout constructed at the Air Rights Parking Garage, providing a direct connection to the Route 34 Expressway. The modern roundabout also provides a traffic calming connection between the expressway and the lower level of the parking garage, as well as to allow trucks direct access to the Smilow Cancer Center Loading Dock.

Award Winning

This project received a 2009 Achievement in Civil Engineering Award from the Connecticut Society of Civil Engineers, and another Engineering Excellence Award in 2010 from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Connecticut. In 2011, the Connecticut Building Congress chose the Smilow Cancer Hospital as its First Place award recipient for new construction. The recognition was for project excellence and close collaboration among those involved in the resulting construction.
