Roof Replacement, HVAC Design & Accessibility Upgrades

Tighe & Bond provided design services for major renovations to the 45,300 SF Samuel Watson Elementary School in Fall River, MA. The project was completed as an Accelerated Repair Project with funding assistance from the Massachusetts School Building Authority. Renovations included replacement of the roof, replacement of the boilers, upgrades to the electrical and mechanical systems, installation of a fire protection system, renovation of multiple bathrooms, and installation of air conditioning throughout the school.

Mechanical system upgrades included replacement of the steam boiler plant and design of a new variable refrigerant flow system and dedicated outdoor air system to provide ventilation air and air conditioning to the school. Due to the large-scale renovations, accessibility upgrades were also required. These included the installation of an elevator and construction of a new entrance with an accessible ramp. Due to the age of the building, Tighe & Bond’s scope of services also included a full hazardous building materials assessment and oversight during abatement of asbestos and other hazardous materials.

With these upgrades, the Samuel Watson Elementary School can now provide an energy-efficient, accessible learning environment for its students.
