New Facility Designed for Current & Future Water Quality Needs
Tighe & Bond helped the Dracut Water Supply District address elevated iron and manganese at its Tyngsborough Wellfield while planning for future treatment needs. The project combines a new biological filtration facility with a subsequent PFAS treatment expansion, supporting the District’s ability to respond to changing water quality requirements.
New Wellfield Treatment Facility
Tighe & Bond designed a 2.65-million-gallon-per-day biological pressure filtration facility to treat water from multiple public supply wells. The facility removes iron and manganese and incorporates provisions for future PFAS treatment.
Supporting systems include backwash water recycling to reduce waste, residual drying beds for material management, and chemical feed systems for pH adjustment, disinfection, fluoridation, and corrosion control. A finished water clearwell supports 4-log inactivation of viruses. Funded through the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection’s Drinking Water State Revolving Fund program, the facility improves water quality and strengthens system reliability.
PFAS Treatment Expansion
The second phase adds PFAS treatment to the facility, building on the flexibility incorporated into the original design. Planning for expansion during the first phase allows the District to accommodate additional treatment with limited disruption to ongoing operations.
Together, the two phases address established and emerging water quality challenges while helping the District adapt its infrastructure to serve customers’ long-term drinking water needs.
