The Reactory Biomedical Manufacturing Campus

Project Highlights

  • Geotechnical Engineering
  • Environmental Site Assessment
  • Stormwater

Adjacent to the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, The Reactory is a new 46-acre biomanufacturing campus to be developed on the site of the former Worcester State Hospital. Tighe & Bond provided geotechnical and environmental services to WuXi Biologics, whose plans to build a $60 million facility on the site will be the company’s first in North America.

Tighe & Bond’s work included environmental due diligence and site assessment, design and implementation of a soil and groundwater subsurface exploration and sampling program, installation of groundwater monitoring wells, and collection of GIS data for the subsurface investigation program. The team made recommendations for management of excess soil and groundwater, opinions of probable costs, and environmental permitting strategies for the planned development. Tighe & Bond’s geotechnical team oversaw subsurface borings and test pits, and the collection of soil samples and bedrock cores. They also oversaw a report with recommendations for surface suitability, foundation and slab requirements, bearing pressure and settlement, foundation and under slab drainage, lateral earth pressures, pavement design, and geotechnical construction recommendations.
