Historic Edgartown Lighthouse Restoration
The Edgartown Lighthouse tower was originally relocated to the Island from Ipswich in 1939 following hurricane damage to the original structure at the site. When the Town of Edgartown sought to rehabilitate this historic structure, Tighe & Bond led a team of in-house wetland scientists, structural engineers and hazardous building material assessment staff aided by preservation architects from the Spencer Preservation Group to restore the lighthouse.
The scope of services included developing a plan to protect shore bird habitat during construction, conducting a structural evaluation of the cast-iron lighthouse tower, mitigating hazardous materials and designing a historically accurate rehabilitation. Repairs included sandblasting the cast-iron exterior, re-painting, repairing cast-iron panels and restoring wooden windows.
With the repairs now complete, Edgartown Lighthouse is now once again open to the public, maintaining the lighthouse as a navigational aid to mariners and visually appealing public landmark. To learn more about this historic structure, visit the MV Museum’s online exhibit.
