Technical Specialist Spotlight: Zhijian (Jason) Tang, Ph.D., PE

Dr. Zhijian (Jason) Tang is a specialist in water and wastewater engineering and has completed projects for private utilities as well as state and local water and wastewater authorities. Jason has applied his expertise to wastewater treatment plant projects across Connecticut and Massachusetts. One of his most impactful projects was the upgrades made to the wastewater treatment plant in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Jason and his team enhanced the plant by overcoming the challenge of fitting a new tertiary treatment system in the existing hydraulic profile without adding a pumping system.

He has also completed numerous assignments internationally for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). Jason served as the lead water and wastewater engineer on projects that addressed water and wastewater infrastructure for communities in several countries including Liberia, Afghanistan, and Iraq.

Jason’s skill set has also been used during his time as a university lecturer and postdoctoral research staff. His love for engineering motivated him to share his knowledge about the industry and the latest available technologies with future engineers. Jason also notes that his experiences in the academic sector fine-tuned his ability to quickly identify problems and any potential impacting factors when addressing a client’s project. He can efficiently analyze data, draw conclusions and use all resources to find an efficient solution.

“Working with every project and client is different and there are always new challenges. I like to take on those challenges and feel very good when successful solutions are found for our client.” – Zhijian (Jason) Tang, Ph.D., PE

Jason has a master’s degree in Environmental Science & Engineering and is a Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Engineering. He is also an active member of the Water Environment Federation, New England Water Works Association, and the American Water Works Association.
