National Intern Day: Celebrating the Next Generation of STEM Professionals

This summer, our firm has welcomed a diverse group of 14 graduate and undergraduate student interns. Working in such a variety of Business Lines and Departments, such as Land Use, Water or Marketing, interns get a personalized experience to meet their goals, working actively in the field and in the office.

In celebration of National Intern Day, our Human Resources team put together our own “Intern Day” on Monday, July 24th, where all interns were welcomed to travel from the firm’s offices throughout the Northeast to the headquarters office in Westfield, MA, where they were celebrated by sharing a meal, as well as presentations about the professional, educational, and real-life experiences they have experienced throughout the summer. Intern Day provided a forum for the whole crew of interns to meet face to face to mingle, share their ideas and experiences, and present what they have learned this summer to leaders and other staff at Tighe & Bond.

“A valuable experience I have had would be sitting in on meetings to see how a decision is made; I have been able to witness the different groups that come together to make decisions on a project. It is more than just the team on which I work: you have landscape architects, geotechnical engineers, structural engineers, and mechanical engineers coming together to give their input. I have learned there is no clear-cut solution to problems or a design in general. There is a lot of time and effort that goes into it,” said Julia Bowman, a student from the University of New Hampshire and Land Use Business Line Intern in the Portsmouth office.

Ryan Malaquias, a student at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and intern in the Water Business Line, expressed his excitement about seeing infrastructure projects come to life in the field and shared his experience: “This internship has been great so far! One of my favorite parts about being an intern at Tighe & Bond is the company culture. From the first day that I started this internship, everyone has always been willing to answer my many questions and lend a helping hand. I feel like I’m excited to come into the office every day because of the great people that work here.”
