Cross Highway Improvements Deliver Safety & Multi-Modal Infrastructure
In Westport, Connecticut’s Cross Highway corridor, Tighe & Bond led the design of a multi-phased transportation improvement project to improve safety and mobility for all road users. The project began with a schematic design study that evaluated alternatives to improve conditions at key intersections and along the roadway.
“Community input helped us understand where people were experiencing challenges along Cross Highway,” said Senior Project Manager Craig Yannes. “That feedback guided design decisions at key intersections and along the corridor, with a focus on improving visibility and pedestrian connections.”
The first phase focused on intersections at North Street and Bayberry Lane, with improvements including enhanced visibility for road users, wall relocation, new pedestrian crossings, the addition of sidewalks along the eastern portion of the corridor, vegetation clearing, and advanced warning features such as radar actuated, illuminated stop signs at Bayberry Lane and a rectangular rapid flashing beacon (RRFB) at a midblock crossing.

The second phase of the project replaced the existing bridge over Dead Man’s Brook with a one that is 5 feet wider, allowing for the addition of a sidewalk connecting the corridor with a continuous pedestrian path. The new bridge is engineered to mitigate flooding concerns by increasing hydraulic capacity and is designed to accommodate a 50-year storm event.

Together, these improvements improve driver awareness, pedestrian visibility, and overall corridor function while responding directly to community priorities.
