Spotlight on Westford Track & Athletic Fields
The Nashoba Valley Technical High School occupies a multi-acre site in Westford, Massachusetts. In keeping with its philosophy that athletics and physical activity be an integral part of a student’s education, the school sought to construct a new track and field on its campus. The administration’s goal was a clear value-based analysis of options for track size and surfacing, field surfacing, and assistance with finalizing and prioritizing athletic program elements.
New Track and Fields
Our team performed a feasibility study to summarize the suitability of several candidate sites for development of the new track and field. We proposed two conceptual design layouts; both concepts provided a layout for all high school track and field events, as well as locations for four tennis courts and one additional practice field. We also provided the final design, permitting, and construction oversight for this project as it moved forward.
The new athletic facility replaced the existing grass football field with a synthetic turf multi-use field, field lighting, and a 1,000-seat bleacher system. The project also included a new 400-meter latex track. A softball field was relocated adjacent to the track and field area, and four tennis courts were constructed on another parcel that the school owns.
Our scope of services included a feasibility study, conceptual plans, a preliminary opinion of probable construction costs, preliminary schedule, summary of permitting requirements, and rendering of the preferred alternative. In addition, we conducted a site investigation (including an assessment of geotechnical conditions, available utilities, wetlands and accessibility) to determine the suitability of the sites. We also provided design, permitting, and construction oversight.
