Tighe & Bond employees pitched in to make the holidays a little brighter for 60 children and their families in the Westfield area. Colleen Corliss, Payroll Administrator in the firm’s Accounting Department, organized the annual employee gift giving event to benefit children in need through the Salvation Army’s Angel Program. This fall, Borrego Solar Systems began construction of a 2.3 megawatt solar installation array on the site of the former Oliver Street Landfill in Easthampton. Tighe & Bond has provided civil engineering, permitting and construction phase services throughout the duration of this groundbreaking project, which represents the first solar energy system constructed on a closed landfill in Massachusetts. Last month, Tighe & Bond named Nancy Milkey, P.G., LSP the firm’s new Technical Practice Leader (TPL) for the Environmental Practice Group. In this role, she will coordinate and champion the firm’s extensive environmental assessment capabilities and ensure that the Environmental Practice Group stays abreast of local, state, and federal regulations that impact clients.

Earlier this month, Tighe & Bond awarded $100,000 of pro bono engineering and environmental services to two non-profit organizations. The dollar amount of the services – which will be split between the Boys & Girls’ Club of Greater Holyoke, Inc. and the Big Pond Preservation Association/Horizons, Inc. – is earmarked to support a specific noteworthy project for each group.

Matthew Dodge, P.E., recently joined Tighe & Bond, Inc., bringing more than 10 years of experience to the firm’s expanding structural engineering team. Well versed in designing buildings and major civil structures – such as tunnels, bridges and subways. Dodge specializes in the assessment and mitigation of vibrations on building structures to ensure occupant comfort and satisfactory operation of sensitive equipment. He also specializes in designing massive jointless concrete structures that resist cracking from temperature fluctuations and long-term shrinkage.

Despite a challenging economy, Tighe & Bond, Inc. funded its yearly scholarships, awarded through the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts, to assist four local college students pursuing engineering and related degrees. According to David Pinsky, president of the civil and environmental engineering firm, “Tighe & Bond firmly believes in the importance of higher education for promising students who will someday lead the engineering marketplace.”

Tighe & Bond recently completed the environmental cleanup and restoration of Long Beach West, marking the end of a two-year long project aimed at protecting a critical piece of Connecticut’s shoreline for people, wildlife, plants and fish. This promises to be a new beginning for wildlife and recreation possibilities along this 1.5 mile shoreline in the Town of Stratford.   Although the habitat restoration is an ongoing effort, the hazardous materials and debris that littered this picturesque 35-acre barrier beach are gone, the demolition of more than 60 abandoned, deteriorating buildings is complete and habitat restoration is well on its way.

The Connecticut Building Congress (CBC) chose Yale-New Haven’s Smilow Cancer Hospital as its First Place award recipient for new construction at the organization’s annual awards dinner at the Bond Ballroom in Hartford on June 14th. The 14-story, 487,000 square foot hospital is the most comprehensive, state-of-the-art cancer care facility in Connecticut and is a leader in personalized patient care.

The Engineering News-Record (ENR) once again ranked Tighe & Bond among the top 500 design firms in the nation. ENR ranks companies on the previous year’s gross revenue for providing design services to domestic and international markets. Tighe & Bond ranked 309 in ENR’s 2011 report, a reflection of the firm’s 2010 annual gross revenue of $32 million.

As part of its 100th anniversary celebration this year, Tighe & Bond will identify two worthy projects for non-profit agencies that are in need of Tighe & Bond’s services, and then provide each with $50,000 worth of pro bono engineering services. To identify potential projects for these services, Tighe & Bond published a request for proposals and received 15 responses by the April 29th deadline.

Since the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) prequalified Tighe & Bond to provide designer services for its Green Repair Program last year, the firm has been awarded multiple school improvement projects that fall under the auspices of this program. Tighe & Bond currently is performing repairs at 12 public schools in Greenfield, Orange, Palmer and Westfield using a prescribed set of sustainable standards.
